Dewi is a skilled woman working for one of the largest accounting firms in the world, often referred to as one of the “Big Four” in consulting, her career path hasn’t been easy, she had to work hard, pushing herself to continually learn, now, she has become a senior auditor at the firm, and her job requires her to travel across Indonesia, sometimes even abroad, she has visited many places, living the life she once dreamed of as a child.
Dewi’s father, Mr. Dodi, had worked as a technician at a large company, as a central technician, he was often assigned to travel across Nusantara, when Dewi was a child, she remembers seeing her father leave for work with a small suitcase, traveling to various cities to fix machines, to dewi, her father’s stories were always exciting, flying on planes, seeing Indonesia’s islands, staying in luxurious hotels, and tasting local cuisine, “If only I could travel like Dad, it must be so fun,” she thought each time she heard those stories.
However, Mr. Dodi knew that the reality was not as glamorous, each trip was a heavy responsibility, and he often felt exhausted, spending nights at work sites and rarely having time to relax, he had even fallen ill while working, which forced him to take a short break, despite the challenges, Mr. Dodi remained optimistic, he was always thinking of his family and just wanted to ensure they lived a comfortable and prosperous life.
Dewi grew into a smart and ambitious woman, after completing her accounting degree with a high GPA, she felt very proud during the early years of her career: working with large clients, traveling to new cities, and working in grand office buildings, it felt as if her childhood dream had come true.
However, over time, Dewi began to feel an exhaustion she had never imagined, her job often required her to work late into the night, even on weekends, every trip felt like a heavy task, not a vacation, she often felt distant from her family, especially when she missed important moments at home, on top of that, the workload piled up, and dealing with difficult clients, discrepancies in data, and struggles to obtain valid financial information stressed her out.
One night, after finishing a audit report, Dewi sat alone in her hotel room feeling empty. Despite achieving everything she once dreamed of, she couldn’t shake the sense of dissatisfaction that lingered.
During a visit home for the weekend, she spoke to her father,”Dad, I used to wish for a life like yours, traveling all the time, but now, I’m tired, I feel like this isn’t what I really need,” she said quietly, “When I’m traveling by plane or train, I’m always working, always on standby with my laptop, I don’t get to enjoy the travel while still handling my work,” she continued.
Mr. Dodi looked at his daughter and said, “That’s how life is. Sometimes, what looks beautiful from the outside isn’t necessarily what we need on the inside, I was the same way, It seemed great, but it was exhausting, but I kept going, all for you, so you could get a proper education.” He smiled and added, “Now that you are independent, I’ve left my job and become an entrepreneur.”
Hearing those words, Dewi made a big decision, she resigned from the company and chose a more standard job with 9-to-5 hours at a local company, although her salary was not as high as before, she felt much happier, now, she had time for her family and could enjoy life without the pressure of targets and business trips.
Dewi came to realize that what she want wasn’t always what she truly needed. Perhaps some people are fine working late into the night, but Dewi was not one of them, “Happiness isn’t about how far we go, but how close we are to what truly matters,” Mr. Dodi smiled proudly as he saw his daughter discover the true meaning of life.
