Have you ever felt scared to try something new? Afraid of failing, getting hurt, or reliving painful experiences from the past? If you have, I’d like to share a story that might make you rethink fear.
I vividly remember one moment from my childhood. It happened when I went swimming at Baturaden. The pool was clean and refreshing. At first, everything was going well. But then, I decided to try the adult pool, and that’s when it happened, I almost drowned. I was terrified, panicked, and felt completely helpless all at once. I remember desperately reaching for the edge of the pool, flailing like a frog trying to jump out of water. Thankfully, a man nearby noticed and came to my rescue, grabbing my hand and pulling me out.
Afterward, I thought to myself, “If no one had helped me, I might not be here today.”
That experience could have left a deep trauma. I could’ve chosen to avoid swimming forever, to hate pools, beaches, the sea, or anything related to water, but then I realized that all those fears were just in my mind. If I let that fear win, I’d never know the joy of swimming freely.
So, I decided to face my fear. Slowly but surely, I started learning how to swim again, and the result? Now I can enjoy being in the water without any fear holding me back.
I’m sure you’ve had moments like this in your life too. Fear is natural, but if you let it control you, you’ll never move forward.
Fear exists in our minds, It’s there to remind us to be cautious, not to stop us from moving forward, unfortunately, we often misunderstand it, we let fear take control instead of using it as a tool.
Life is a lot like swimming. Sometimes, we feel like we’re drowning. Sometimes, we run out of breath. But if you keep learning and practicing, eventually, you’ll master the waves.
Imagine if I had chosen to give up because of my fear of drowning. I might never have discovered how amazing it is to swim in the ocean, to see the breathtaking coral reefs of Indonesia, to watch sea turtles, pufferfish, clownfish, and jellyfish gently rising and falling with the waves. All of it is so beautiful. But because I chose to rise above my fear, I can now enjoy all that beauty.
Fear is normal. Everyone has it. But the choice to keep going or stop is entirely up to you. When you’re brave enough to face your fears, you’ll realize there’s so much beauty waiting on the other side of your courage.
Maybe right now, you’re facing your own fears. Maybe you’re afraid of failing in your career, afraid of heartbreak, or afraid of reliving a painful experience from the past. But remember, fear is just a thought in your mind. Listen to it, but don’t let it stop you. Let it remind you to be careful, not to give up.
Trust me, fear is not the end of the road. It’s just a phase you need to go through. Beyond fear lies immense potential, happiness, and success. Just like how I eventually found the beauty of the underwater world after overcoming my trauma, you too can discover similar wonders in your own life.
So, no matter what happens, keep swimming. Confront your fears. Who knows? On the other side of that fear, there might be a life more beautiful than anything you’ve ever imagined.
